How to Experience Parksville Like a Local This Winter

December 04, 2024

Winter in Vancouver Island's Parksville offers a quiet, intimate experience with stunning beaches, charming shops, loads of events during the holiday season, and cold-weather outdoor adventures.

At The Beach Club Resort, the cooler months provide the perfect opportunity to explore the area like a local—fewer crowds, no hustle and bustle, just peaceful days filled with hidden gems. Whether you're planning a winter vacation for family fun or a relaxing couples' getaway, here are some of the best things to do in Parksville during the cooler months.

Experience Beachside Dome Dining

Starting in mid-November, The Beach Club becomes one of the most sought-after places to eat in Parksville, thanks to its whimsical beachside dining experience set in beautifully decorated, heated, illuminated domes. This unique opportunity lets you savour a special 3-course menu while taking in stunning winter views (during the lunch hour, you can order from the restaurant's all-day menu). Advance reservations are required.

Cruise Along the Boardwalk

Take advantage of The Beach Club's Stay® | Well amenity program and borrow a complimentary bicycle to explore Parksville's iconic boardwalk. As a major bonus, it's practically in the resort's backyard!

Take a Leisurely Stroll or Hike

The parks and trails (and beaches!) throughout Parksville and Qualicum Beach offer several options for peaceful winter walks. Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park features endless sandy stretches and beautiful shoreline trails, while Englishman River Falls Provincial Park offers a network of gentle paths and two stunning main waterfalls that flow all winter long. Cathedral Grove is another fantastic winter hike option, about 20 minutes from most Parskville attractions.

When snow really starts to stick, consider slipping on a pair of snowshoes and exploring the trails at Mount Arrowsmith Regional Park.

Enjoy the Beach

While swimming probably isn't on your winter vacation itinerary, this is actually an ideal time to enjoy other aspects of the area beaches. Slow things down and embrace quiet, nature-focused Parksville activities like birdwatching, collecting shells, and looking for marine life. End your day with a breathtaking winter sunset, watching the sky turn different colours as the sun dips below the horizon. You can't go wrong anywhere in the area, but Parksville Beach and Qualicum Beach are two local favourites.

Explore the Local Craft Beer Scene

Vancouver Island’s craft beer scene is thriving, and Parksville itself is certainly no exception. Visit local breweries such as Mount Arrowsmith Brewing Company, Fern + Cedar Brewing, or the quirky Love Shack Libations nano brewery for a pint. Before you do, check out the BC Ale Trail, an "ale-venture" and associated map that allows you to earn rewards for visiting certain breweries. That's right—you'll literally be rewarded for drinking beer (how many other things to do in Parksville offer that?!)!

Go Tidepooling at Madrona Point

For a great way to get outdoors that also offers family fun and a bit of education, head to Madrona Point in nearby Nanoose Bay. Low tide reveals fascinating tidepools brimming with colourful marine life. Be sure to check tide times before heading out, and wear waterproof shoes for the best experience.

Visit Horne Lake Caves

Parksville locals know that a bit of winter weather doesn’t stop the adventures. Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park, open and easily accessible year-round, offers an unforgettable underground experience. The cooler months actually bring an added thrill, as the rainy season brings out some of the caves’ natural features. You could go several times throughout your winter vacation and never have the same experience twice!

Shop Local

Support Parksville’s vibrant small business community by shopping at some of the community's independently-owned shops. Pines Gift Shop always has that perfect little something for anyone (including yourself!), Bumblebaby Boutique carries everything you could possibly want for babies and younger children, Coast and Cottage sells home decor and other items that perfectly embody the island's coastal aesthetic. There's also the Qualicum Beach Farmers Market, held indoors every Saturday year-round.

Catch the Rotating Exhibits at Old School House Arts Centre

Art enthusiasts will love the ever-changing exhibits at the Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach. Rotating displays feature work from a wide range of talented local artists, providing a fresh reason to visit every season. You'll also find community workshops, classes, and special events, such as Art in the Attic, an artists' marketplace that takes place a couple of times each year.

Enjoy a Spa Day

Winter calls for a little self-care, and Stonewater Spa is the perfect solution. Conveniently located at The Beach Club Resort, you can indulge in some much-needed pampering right onsite. Choose from treatments including several types of massage (perfect for relieving holiday season stress!), body wraps, or facials. The spa is also the answer to what to do in Parksville to combat winter’s chill on particularly rainy or snowy days.

Your Parksville Winter Adventure Awaits

Locals will be the first to tell you that, somehow, Parksville’s charm shines even brighter in the winter. We know it's a bit of a cliché, but there's truly something for everyone to enjoy. From scenic walks and cozy places to eat in Parksville to sampling local brews and unique outdoor adventures like tidepooling and snowshoeing, this winter vacation is almost guaranteed to leave you feeling refreshed and inspired. And when you book a stay at The Beach Club Resort, you'll be well-positioned to see and do it all.
